James Lovell Jr., Fred Haise and Jack Swigert found themselves a dangerous 400 KM above the surface of the far side of the moon. So much attention is given to how hard it was to get them back home safely that some forget just how far out they got, much higher up than their original mission had planned (their original mission was to have Lovell and Haise land on the Fra Mauro range still on the close side of the moon).
