In American English can one use the expression "to shoot one's mouth off" without implying physical self-harm and firearms?

Question #65446. Asked by bloomsby. (May 08 06 4:01 AM)

Absolutely...at least in the Western U.S.--It is a common term meaning "to go off on a verbal tangent."

Akin to having spoken when speaking wasn't much appreciated.
