Apparently, all polar bears are left handed. When stalking prey on the ice, a polar bear draws his right paw across his black nose, hiding his primary dark body part, the better to successfully sneak up on his next meal. (Some polar bears also squeeze their eyes almost closed, for even more complete camouflage.) Then, the bear batters his lunch to death with his stronger, dominant, left paw.

Why are left handed people called south paws then if polar bears come from the Northern Hemisphere?

Because the term "South Paw" comes from baseball...

I was under the impression the term "southpaw" cames from Boxing. But according to:

http://www.wordorigins.org/wordors.htm#Southpaw
Southpaw
Southpaw has its origins in 1880s' baseball slang. Baseball diamonds were often arranged so the batters would face east, to avoid looking into the afternoon sun. The pitcher's left hand, or paw, would therefore be on the southern side.
See what one can learn from a Polar Bear!
