My husband is obsessed with a certain type of puzzle, the name of which is actually an abbreviation. It was possibly inspired by the invention of a famed mathematician, and even a character on a television drama has been seen trying to solve an example. What is this puzzle, what is the translation of its full name, and who was the mathematician?

Sudoku.
"Suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru" (”Žš‚Í“Æg‚ÉŒÀ‚é, "Suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru"?), meaning "the digits must remain single".
Based on Leonhard Euler's "Latin squares"

A yay to you, Ceetee!
I posted this question because today is my husband's (aka The Maven's) birthday, and I've given him an electronic Sudoku generator as one of his gifts.
I may end up regretting this.
