The Vanessid butterflies (Red Admiral, Tortoiseshell, Painted Lady and so on) can see red. This was established by painting vcoloured varnish over the eyes of some, whereupon they couldn't see the red flowers they often frequent. (If you have red sedums in the garden, you'll not find white butterflies on them - they do attract the vanessids.) Bees can see in ultraviolet. To a bee, a daisy flower is a centre with a ring of bright dots somewhat away from it, as the outer parts of the outer florets (petals to most people) shine in ultraviolet. May 15 06, 5:45 PM
