Née (or né in the case of males) simply means 'born'. It is most commonly found when describing married women, but can be used in any case where a name has changed. So when Caro was engaged to Mike her surname was Martin, but she was born as Carol Tyler. Sons and daughters from previous marriages may or may not take the mother's new surname.
