She was an old and floppy doll when a little girl named Marcella Gruelle found a doll in her family attic. Her father, Johnny, saw possibilities in that old plaything, so he repaired her and gave her the name.

Johnny Gruelle, creator of Raggedy Ann, created the name by combining the titles of two of his favorite books by poet and family friend, James Whitcomb Riley -- "The Raggedy Man" and "Little Orphant Annie".
