Why is the kangaroo considered the national animal of Australia?

If you look at the Australian coat of arms, it has a kangaroo on one side, and an emu on the other. I've been told that this is because neither of these animals can move backwards (kangaroos can't hop backwards, and emus can't run backwards). Don't know how true it is, but I remember that from 2nd grade.

There are no official animals of Australia, but there are an awful lot of kangaroos. (And a lot more are appearing as road kill because of the drought at the moment, let me assure you.)
