Why are New Zealanders called Kiwis?

There are several different versions out there... ranging from New Zealander's sharing some of the Kiwi's various habits...up to it being a mere reflection of the Kiwi being a native bird. My favorite is:
"New Zealanders are commonly called "Kiwis" not because we cannot fly but rather, because we are unique."

Well, since i am a 'Kiwi' i can tell you the real reason. RJ_Lupin is part correct. The Kiwi is our national emblem, and it is native to NZ. I believe you can only find the Kiwi in NZ.
And well c'mon, Kiwi is alot shorter than New Zealander.
