The broader view would encompass the WHITE CRANE as a SYSTEM utilized by many of the martial arts.

I'm pretty sure I remember reading that the crane kick used in the 1984 film "The Karate Kid" was a fictional creation for the film.
Still, the character Mr Miyagi was named after a real noted practitioner of the karate form known as Gojo Ryu. This involves a technique called the Fukien White Crane. I suppose that could have been the influence for the name "crane kick".

By the way, Hilary Swank and David Schwimmer both made early appearances in this film.
Anyway, must go. I have a fence to paint, a car to wax, and a floor to polish.
