Why was Japan an ally with Germany in World War II but not in World War I?

    Question #66142. Asked by author.

    pjotr

Well for one thing, both countries took actions that would benefit themselves the most. Another thing to consider, is that governments change, and so the course of action the country takes. The German government during World War I was not the same as the new one during World War II. But to get to the point, Germany basically wanted power in Europe, while Japan in Asia. Germany had many holdings in China before World War I, so it would only be logical for Japan to declare war on Germany during World War I while Germany was distracted fighting Britain and France. Japan made rapid, technological and military advances between that period and German foreign policy thought it a better idea to be allied with Japan instead of China in case trouble developed. After all, they both had a common barrier to world domination, and that was the United States.
