Where are sardines commonly caught?

One definite is off the west coast of Spain and Portugal as I paid a visit to the canning factory in Vigo. They are of course named after their other popular venue, Sardinia, further east in the Mediterranean.
While we're on the subject they are actually young pilchards, and if barbecued taste far better than any other way of cooking.

Also, caught off the coast of South America, North America (California--Ventura Coast), New South Wales, coast of AndalucĂa, Malaysia, Miyazaki coast and many, many other places. They swim towards the top of the water and near the coast, thus, more easily caught under those conditions.
