    Why is the loser in a competition called the 'runner-up', and whoever came up with the term?

    		If you look at a race...there is a WINNER and then comes the next "RUNNER" UP to the finish line and the next "RUNNER" UP to the finish line, etc. So, you have the WINNER, and the FIRST RUNNER-UP (to the finish) and the SECOND RUNNER-UP (to the finish)...etc.
