    Why is there sometimes a piece of cotton in a small medication filled with pills?

    The practice of shoving cotton into aspirin bottles dates back to about 1914 or 1915, around the time Bayer began compressing aspirin powder into tablets. The following link "implies" that it was to hold the tablets firm during handling in order that they would not break into a gazillion little pieces.
