"Summertime means vacations to the mountains or beach, and cookouts in the backyard. It is also an opportunity to sit around the camp fire, on the beach, or in your backyard and gaze at the night sky with its--in the words of Carl Sagan--"billions and billions" of stars."

If the Universe is infinite then there are no numerical boundaries so it is impossible to calculate the # of stars present. Even and estimate is incorrect when one speaks in the infinite.
As for the "known Universe", that which man has viewed or placed a boundry upon, as spoken of above, an estimate is still a stretch because from an Earthly view of objects many, many, lightyears away, man can not be sure that these objects still exist. As we see them is where they were in space that many years ago. Man can not be sure of anything that distant.
