Why do females refer to their female friends as "girlfriends" but males do not refer to their male friends as "boyfriends"?

A)Because that would indicate a sexual relationship. B)Heterosexaul men have few female "friends" so "my friend" said by male means male friend. If they had a female friend, they would probably indicate that by saying "my female friend" or something. C) I am not sure about gay men. I would guess their boyfriend or partner they would call boyfriend or partner, a male friend they would call a "friend" and a female friend they would call a "girlfriend". In the UK most women don't refer to their female friends as 'girlfriends' due to the sexual relationship connotation. I think it's much more common in the US. May 31 06, 2:05 PM
