    Is there an official number of exceptions to the "i before e except after c" rule?

    There are well over 100 such exceptions, says David Crystal in "The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language," with IE following C, or EI following just about anything it chooses.

    o and theres also other parts of the ditty, like:
    i before e except after c or when sounded as "I" as in Einstein Or "A" as in weigh. said the website in http://www.spelling.org/Books/Mastering_I_before_E.htm
    and one that i learned is like i before e, except after c, or when sounding like long a, as in neighbor and weigh
