Why is .co.uk widely used in Britain where .com, .net or even .org.uk would be used in America - and would seem more appopriate? (For example, surely bbc.co.uk is bizarre).

The .com ending on web sites was originally designed for companies, but they very quickly realised that there wouldn't be enough web addresses for the whole world, so they invented the country endings, such as .uk for United Kingdom, .de for Germany (Deutschland) etc. Since many companies in America already had .com addresses, they didn't bother introducing a .usa address. But in the UK, they needed to distinguish between companies, voluntary organisations and others, so they invented the .co.uk, .or.uk and so on.

It's not the country abbreviations that puzzle me, but the .co For example, eBay in America is ebay.com and in Germany it's ebay.de Why the extra bit for the UK division?

The usual reason for only having the country like de or ca is a low enough population to not need any extras, but then again you'd expect Germany to need a lot more than just .de
I also discovered each country chooses its own selections so there's no requirement for uniformity across the world. Colleges are .ac in the UK but .edu in many other places. Unless they make a world standard each country will be fairly independent in many options.

Echoes, as we know, are reflections of the sound waves from distant objects. It would seem that in mountainous areas where the terrain is more varied, there would be plenty of opportunity for hearing echoes. Paradoxically, the opposite is the case: Echoes occur much more seldom and are harder to catch. Why?
