Gerald Ford became the first sitting American president to participate in a scheduled PGA Tour golf event when he played in the 1975 Jackie Gleason Inverarry Classic Pro-Am (now the Honda Classic) in Lauderhill, Fla. Joining Ford in his foursome were Gleason, Hope and Nicklaus, who would also fast become a lifelong friend.
