In the movie 'Philadelphia' there is an aerial shot of a statue on top of a building, presumably the courthouse. It is of a man in a tricorn hat, I think. Can anyone tell me who he is?

    Question #66743. Asked by darkpresence.

At one time, there was a gentlemen's agreement that no building should be higher than Penn's statue. (WIKI)

Incidentally...I found this info on the statue:

Alexander Milne Calder's statue is the tallest on any building in the world. It was constructed in 14 pieces and was placed facing northeast, looking toward the site at which Penn negotiated his treaty with Indian tribes. As a result, the statue's face is never directly lit by the sun.

    Height: 37 feet
    Weight: 53,348 pounds (27 tons)
    Material: Bronze
    Hat circumference: 23 feet
    Nose length: 18 inches
    Waist circumference: 24 feet
Finger length: 2 feet, 6 inches
Arm length: 12 feet, 6 inches

(E-mail me if you want the link as it is too long to post here...about 15-20 lines)

Here's a shorter link with about the same info.

Not sure what this means: Alexander Milne Calder's statue is the tallest on any building in the world?????????????????????????????????????????????

That old "gentlemen's agreement" was finally violated in the 1980's, with the building of Liberty Place. Some Philadelphians like to claim that a "Curse of Billy Penn" has since affected the city's major league sports teams.

I drive by this Statue often and would never have thought it to be so large. Amazing how perspective can warp ones ability to judge size.

That would make a good AFT question - What is the tallest statue on any building the world?

Here is another Babba. But short in comparison.

On top of the great granite dome stands the gilded bronze statue "Wisconsin" which symbolizes our state motto "Forward". "Wisconsin" has graced the top of the Capitol since 1914 and is 15 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs over 3 tons. In her left hand, "Wisconsin" holds a globe with an eagle perched on it and on top of her helmet is our state animal - the badger. Daniel Chester French of New York sculpted the statue for a cost of $20,325.

Well, if we're going to consider tall statues on buildings, I'll throw in the "Ceres" on the Chicago Board of Trade building (31 feet), and the 7-meter figures that crown the facade of San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome.

But I think Billy has all other comers beat.

The statue on top of the US Capital, named Freedom I think, is nothing to sneeze at either.

The bronze Statue of Freedom by Thomas Crawford is the crowning feature of the dome of the United States Capitol. The statue is a classical female figure of Freedom wearing flowing draperies. Her right hand rests upon the hilt of a sheathed sword; her left holds a laurel wreath of victory and the shield of the United States with thirteen stripes. Her helmet is encircled by stars and features a crest composed of an eagle's head, feathers, and talons, a reference to the costume of Native Americans. A brooch inscribed "U.S." secures her fringed robes. She stands on a cast-iron globe encircled with the national motto, E Pluribus Unum. The lower part of the base is decorated with fasces and wreaths. Ten bronze points tipped with platinum are attached to her headdress, shoulders, and shield for protection from lightning. The bronze statue stands 19 feet 6 inches tall and weighs approximately 15,000 pounds. Her crest rises 288 feet above the east front plaza.

Thanks for the name. I could not find any real information without the name.
