The statue is of the little mermaid from Hans Christian Andersen's story "The Mermaid". Throughout the story she was never given a name, being just called "the little mermaid". In Disney's version of the story, she was given the name "Ariel".

Yup! Why can't Hollywood leave well alone?
I thought I'd discovered her name when I found a souvenir blue glass vase inscribed with a picture of the mermaid, and the words KOBENHAVN and Langelinie, but on examination, it turns out that Langelinie is the suburb of Copenhagen where the statue is located.
