What is the difference between umpire and a referee?

Referees have whistles. Umpires don't have whistles are only in baseball.

an umpire can throw a manager out of the game while a refereee can not.

But a referre can give a coach two technicals fouls in basketball... ejecting the coach form the game.

Same job, different names because of different etymologies. Umpire comes from Middle English/Old French (noumper/nonper); Referee probably made it here from English law background.

This varies from sport to sport of course.
In games such as tennis, badminton and squash, an umpire is in charge of one game (at a time) while the Referee is in charge of a whole tournament, and for example oversees the draw, and match scheduling.

Basically the same thing.

"A referee is a person who has authority to make decisions about play in many sports. Officials in some sports are known by a variety of other titles, including umpire, judge or linesman."

Umpires are stationary, while referees can move around on a soccer field, football field, hockey field, or basketball court.
