It is said that in the 18th century, two well-known artists engaged in a dispute over whether it was possible to produce a successful painting that employed a certain color as its dominant chromatic theme. One of the painters set out to prove that it was, and the result hangs in an American museum. Who were the artists, what is the painting, and can you provide an illustration of it?

No, I'm afraid not, imcas. And while Renoir did paint a few haystacks, the famous "Haystacks" series is Monet's. And 19th century.

Think 18th century and a specific color.

I'm thinking more along the lines of Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds with the resulting 'Blue Boy' living in the Huntington Library, California.

That's the one, peasy, so a yay!

This story may well be apocryphal, but it's been around forever. And the painting is, indeed, a success.
