Clogs with iron rims, (or wooden poles).

Not quite correct, clogs were footwear in their own right. Pattens were wood or iron soles which were strapped onto the shoes in order to reduce wear, and protect the shoes and wearer's feet from muddy roads. Some churches displayed signs requiring people to remove their pattens before entering, especially during services as they were very noisy on stone floors.
There are some good authentic pictures of pattens at http://www.geocities.com/karen_larsdatter/pattens.htm
