O.K., I popped over the local food co-op and bought a box. On each of the two long sides, there are four mother-and-baby animal pairs, so that's 16. (Did they always have babies? I don't think so.)
However, across the top, the 8 adult animals are pictured again, in different poses. So, we have a total of 24 animal figures on the box.
Now, I will eat one of these things and see whether it's any good. I don't think I've tasted one since the age of 3 or 4.

Um, I ate a hippopotamus, and let's just say that I wouldn't recommend these to anyone but a toddler. Bland. Very bland.
I just noticed that the adult lion on the box has a full mane, so it is obviously not a mother.

Sort of graham cracker-ish.

Lanfranco you are correct! There are 24 animals on the box. I bought a box the other day to see if they tasted the same as when I was a kid...not that tasty as an adult. I also noticed the male lion...& I don't remember the baby animals either. I seem to vaguely remember that you could cut the box so the wagon was sitting on the wheels...
