Among the most famous works of Edward Elgar are his "Enigma" variations, so called because every variation refers to a specific person in his life, but nobody knows what the theme symbolizes. The composer chose not to reveal what the theme really means, and left it as a mystery for posterity to ponder on.

The "Enigma Variations", by Elgar, consist of a theme and variations. Each variation is the original theme changed in some way, and represents one of Elgar's friends. Each of these has been solved. But the original theme, called "Enigma" in the score, is itself a variation on another "popular theme" (in the words of the composer). It has never been definitively solved, although a leading contender is that it is a variation on "Rule Britannia".
