Is it true that in France private citizens are not allowed to possess land along the shoreline?

NO, as far as I know.
If someone has bought a house that includes a private beach then it's private.
I will check in the morning but I would be very surprised to find out that a Frenchman/woman is restricted in this way.In fact I'll eat my hat!
