Some American friends were surprised when I encouraged a black cat to cross my path. In what countries is this considered lucky, and in which is it considered unlucky?

The black cat has long been regarded as a symbol of bad luck in the U.S., but also in certain parts of Europe affected by witch hunts -- that would include East Anglia in England in the 17th century, during the Civil War.
