An interesting note. In the negotiations during the aftermath of the war, Benjamin Franklin nearly succeeded in acquiring the territory that is now Canada for the U.S. The War of 1812, which the Americans started to try and get Canada was a resounding defeat for the U.S., the Battle of New Orleans notwithstanding.

And actually the Battle of New Orleans came after the Americans had negotiated basically a surrender. Andrew Jackson hadn't gotten the word yet.
