In Ancient Egypt, papyrus (a form of paper made from the stems of the papyrus plant) was already used for writing as from 2400 BC. Papyrus sheets were glued together to form a scroll.

Books for entertainment and edification are far older than the invention of mechanical printing in east or west. It may be impossible to identify the very first book ever made, but it was certainly a manuscript (if by "manuscript," one can label a set of clay tablets marked by hand).
Codices (singular: codex), similar to our modern books, became popular in the 1st century, especially among Christians, and eventually replaced the old Egyptian, Greek, and Roman scrolls. However, they, too, were handwritten.
