My Maven, who has certainly read St. Augustine, has long been fascinated by the "perpetration of horrible turpitudes." He would like to know more but complains that no one will tell him.

I had thought that fish-wives were the women who worked in the sheds by the docks, gutting and sometimes salting the fish that their husbands, the fishermen on the boats, had brought in..
But my dictionary agrees with zb and peas, so I've learned something today.
So what are those female fish-gutters called?

Personally I'd like to know more about the "Give me chastity and continence, but not yet." thing of St Augustine. ;)

Molly Malone was a fishmonger (and sure, 'twas no wonder because her father and mother were before her). (NOT an Irish song in origin, by the way. English music hall.
