Why are dress sizes always only even numbers? Surely there’s a market for “half” or inbetween sizes?

Question #67301. Asked by darkpresence. (Jun 22 06 3:37 PM)

It seems to me that something called a "half-size" used to be readily available. However, the fashion industry has fooled around with sizing standards so much in the last couple of decades (I now wear a far smaller size than I did 20 years ago, though my weight has not changed) that it's no surprise that the half-size has disappeared. Designers and retailers want customers to feel thinner than they actually are, and I think those old half-sizes were manufactured for women on the "zaftig" side.

In various brands of jeans I've stumbled across an odd numbered size. (In Australia, that is, remembering our sizes are different to the US) There are ladies sizes 11 and 13, although not widely documented on any official size comparison chart.
