Why doesn't England use the Union Jack as their flag during the FIFA World Cup?

    Question #67391. Asked by kyleisalive.

The Union Jack are the Scottish, English and Irish flag combined, not including the Welsh flag because it's too difficult to put on it. If their was 1 football team between all of them, then they'd use it but because England have their own team, as do Wales, Scotland and Ireland, there not all joined together so they don't use the Union Jack because thats the flag for the UK, not just for England. I've tried to explain it as best as I can hope you can understand it.

The Union Jack is the flag of Great Britain not of England. The St. George's cross is the flag of England.

Actually, it is the flag of the United Kingdom, as it includes Northern Ireland. Great Britain does not include Northern Ireland.

The United Kingdom does not include the Isle of Man either. That is why the Isle of Man is not in the European Union.

The Welsh flag isn't included because at the time the Union Flag was being created Wales was regarded as part of England. It hadn't been a complete country (except for perhaps a very short time when most of it was united under one prince) as one independent nation, but was a patchwork of separate principalities. Then the English conquered them.

Of course, England then flout that logic by having the UK anthem "God Save The Queen" played at the start of their matches.

Hey! we're English - we can do what we want...... have you not realised by now that this isn't a very logical country?! If it was up to me we would play some football anthem such as the 3 lions song or something along those lines, after all is the Queen really going to be happy about being associated with all the English football 'hooligans'?

And there are quite a lot of us that don't care a bit about the football, or what teams are playing in it. Of the group of people I was with this weekend, one or two showed some interest in some cricket match, while the rest were much more interested in the music and the dance (and the ale...).

All right, I'll be the pedant and point out that it's the Union flag, it's only the Union Jack when flown at sea.
