Then his son, showing expertise in mathematics and engineering made his name in another unrelated industry by making a certain kind of Greek Alphabet soup of his own. Who was he, how was the Greek alphabet utilized and why couldn't 'A' be used?

He was Vincenzo Lancia, an Italian car manufacturer. He used Greek letters as names for his Lancia cars. I assume he couldn't use A/Alpha because of possible confusion with Alfa Romeo, another Italian car manufacturer, but the attached link says that his first car WAS called the Alfa. Perhaps he didn't put it into commercial production.
