How does it only take seconds for certain animal toxins to kill a human?

They disrupt the flow of signals in the nerves, which means that the person becomes paralysed. If the paralysis is enough to stop the person's heart and breathing, then they will collapse in a coma within seconds, and die when their cells run out of oxygen, which starts to happen about 4 minutes later.
