Actually Fischer went underground after he won the World Championship in Reykjavik against Spassky in 1972. He only publicly appeared for the rematch with Spassky in 92'. One can only guess what the most dominant player in chess history could have done had he been playing competitive chess for those subsequent 20 years after his World Title.
He also was not "undetected" from 92' to 2004. He gave a string of radio interviews prior to the time he was arrested. There was also a rumor that he was tutoring, and perhpas romantically involved with, Judith Polgar, the great Hungarian female chess prodigy during this time.
Also, Nigel Short, the British Grandmaster, has publicly stated he thinks Fischer was playing online chess on the ICC because some unknown person wiped him out (0-8)in an online match. Short is quoted as saying the following:
I am 99 per cent sure that I have been playing against the chess legend. It's tremendously exciting," he said. In October last year, in the first of their four confrontations, Nigel lost 0:8, although he is one of the world's best speed chess players. "In my opinion Fischer is a much stronger speed chess player than Kasparov, which is incredible when one considers that at 58 he is virtually a geriatric in terms of the modern game," Nigel said.
However, Short is probably wrong and not giving computer chess programs enough credit as to their strength.
The Short interview and a critical review of his comments can be found on Chessbase here:

He's Not 'James Bond'

This quiz is about Perry Saturn's partner, and no it's not the mop! I tried to make this quiz as interesting as possible, however, with a man who considers himself to be 'James Bond' like, there really isn't too much information on him. For that I'm glad
