Prompted by question #67646, why did Don McLean's "American Pie" have trouble getting played on some radio stations?

It was too long.
"Well, it was too long to fit on one side of a 45 single, still the most common measure of record sales in 1970. Even after it came out, many times on the radio all you heard was half of it because that's all the 45 had. You had to flip it over to play the rest of the song. Not only did this make it an unlikely disk for dj's to play, its length was commercially unacceptable then. In 1970 for every song played at least one commercial was played. The days of 8-in-a-row and FM stations was just on the verge of being born."
