Starr had been the drummer for rival Liverpool band Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, and had played with The Beatles several times in Hamburg. George Martin was not impressed with Best's playing and privately suggested to Brian Epstien that the band should use another drummer in the studio. Though Best had some popularity and was considered good-looking by many female fans, the three founding members had become increasingly unhappy with his drumming and his moody personality, and Epstein had become exasperated with his refusal to adopt the distinctive hairstyle as part of their unified look.

Yes, that's the official reason from biographies and websites. Does anyone in Liverpool have the inside story?

If it's any consolation, I have two different interviews (one Paul McCartney and one John Lennon) where they said principally the same thing.

Pete Best was not the best drummer for the job.

A recent PBS broadcast insinuated that the other three Beatles were the ones who were at fault in running Best. One thing's for certain, if it was Best's decision not to cut his hair like the others and that is what cost him the job, it was perhaps one of the poorest decisions ever made in the music industry.

George Martin has gone on record several times saying that Best couldn't cut it in the studio. He even suggested that they use a studio drummer for recording and then Pete could tour with them, but George was adamant about not using Best, and if you hear the original demo for Love Me Do (Anthology I), you can hear Pete's limitations. When they brought Ringo in for the next session, George had hired Andy White to drum on the track. Ringo played tamborine. It wasn't until after that George saw Ringo's abilities as a drummer. Ringo still razzes George Martin about it.
