The main causes of a hyper-sensitivity problem are :
1. Gums recession due to age
2. Dentine exposure caused by brushing with a hard bristled toothbrush or incorrect way of brushing.
3. Enamel corrosion caused by chemical agents
4. Tooth decay
According to Sensodyne it was minute holes in the teeth that allowed the cold to reach the dentine. Their solution was to produce a gunk that filled those holes, like a plasterer would on a wall, and would prevent anything getting through as long as used regularly. They showed a diagram of all this but I've never checked the truth with my dentist.
Mine used to be sensitive and are fine now, but the fact most are crowns is more likely the reason.

Sensodyne:
Potassium Nitrate calms the nerves.
Strontium Chloride creates a barrier
You have used all of these at one time or another, and most are probably in your house right now. But do you know which company actually makes these products?
