    		I have no authority to reference, but I always thought that it was invented by the Mayans and that the game originally was played with the heads of defeated enemies wrapped in rags.

    I believe football (soccer) fields have been excavated, complete with spectator seating sections, among the ancient ruins of the Mayans.

    Though, I just talking from the seat of my pants, and this all might be nothing more than an urban legend.
