Why is the ocean blue?

Some of the sunlight is reflected off the surface of the water, reflecting the color of the sky. Some of the sunlight penetrates the water and is scattered by ripples and particles in the water (this tinges the appearance of the ocean with the color of the particles). Why are the sky and the ocean blue? In "Blue Planet Seas of Life: The Deep Sea" they showed a pond within the sea at the bottom of the ocean and said that it was more salty in the pond, but can someone explain why it doesn't diffuse into the regular ocean water? What is a 'blue'? Why is the ocean salty?
