His (Eric W. Loveland) final assignment at the end of the European War was to convert a P-51 Mustang squadron over to flying the new twin-engine De Haviland Hornet fighter - the fastest propellor driven aircraft in World War II.

Perhaps the fastest piston-engined aircraft of WWII produced in large numbers (over 500) was the P-51H lightweight version of the Mustang with a maximum speed of 487 mph. The fastest experimental version of a production piston-engined fighter plane was undoubtedly the XP-47J which was clocked at either 504 or 505 mph in August, 1944.
These facts are from a reference book titled "American Warplanes of World War II", edited by David Donald and published by Barnes & Noble Books, copyright 1995 Aerospace Publishing Ltd.
