That's Latin, the initials are Id Est which means For Example.

In school my language arts teacher said it was "That is", but I think more poeple use it as an example.

Confusion arising here. E.g. (exempli gratia - for example) means 'for example' and is followed by one or more samples of somethijng. I.e. (id est - it is) means 'that is', which in turn means 'which means' and is followed by an explanation of what you've just said.
