Studies also note that specialty cheese consumption, on a per capita basis, has grown five times faster than total cheese consumption over the past decade.
Americans consumed 8.8 billion pounds of cheese in 2003 with a total market value of $39.9 billion, according to the study. Of this total, commodity cheese represented approximately eight billion pounds with an estimated market value of $33.5 billion, and specialty cheese accounted for 815 million pounds worth an estimated $6.4 billion. (The study defines "market value" to include the total sales value of cheese sold through supermarkets and retail outlets, restaurants and fast food outlets, as well as the cheese used as ingredients in packaged foods.)

8.8 Billion divided by 280,000,000 = 31 pounds
Average U.S. cheese consumption nearly tripled between 1970 and 2003, from 11 pounds per person to 31 pounds. In 2000 (the latest year for which nutrient data are available), cheese contributed 26 percent of the calcium in the U.S. diet (up from 11 percent in 1970), 12 percent of the saturated fat (up from 5 percent in 1970), and 16 percent of the sodium (up from 6 percent in 1970).

Don't take too much notice of the info used in these radio quizzes. They seem to get their stuff from sources far less accurate than the researched answers you get on FunTrivia. They're probably using one book of lists, and much as I like books some of the books of lists around are very far from being accurate.

This site says 27 pounds a year, but, What-A-Mess has produced some impressive statistics so I wouldn't discount his answer too quickly. Okay, let's face it...what is the difference between 27 pounds of cheese and 30 pounds of cheese when you're constipated from eating too much of it? See what I mean?
