The shortest major league player was Eddie Gaedel, who measured 3 feet 7 inches and weighed 65 pounds. Gaedel pinch-hit for the St. Louis Browns (AL) vs. the Detroit Tigers (AL) on August 19th, 1951. Wearing the number 1/8, and using a toy bat, the batter with the smallest ever Major League strike zone, walked on four pitches.

This was a stunt concocted by Bill Veeck and was based on a short story called 'You Could Look It Up' by James Thurber. Gaedel wore Bill DeWitt Jr.'s uniform. Dewitt was part owner of the St. Loiuis Browns. Jr. went to Yale with Dubya, and later helped him to bankroll the Texas Ranger purchase.
