Is indigo a real colour? I have heard that Newton wanted to match the spectrum to the musical scale and "stretched" it to make it fit.

Yes, indigo is a real colour.
The spectrum is a range of colours. It is completely arbitrary how it is divided up. You could divide the spectrum into ten thousand different colours if you wanted to, and they would all be real colours. But most people see red, orange, yellow, green and blue as distinct colours. Violet and indigo are not so easy to see. So it could be that somebody decided on seven colours to match the mystical number seven.
