Is it safe enough to delete the files named INDEX.DAT?

I wouldn't recommend deleting any system file unless you know exactly what it is used for. The copies of index.dat I've examined seems to be a Client URL Cache, which is not very important, but there is no telling how the operating system will react if it is deleted. They tend to be very small, so there's no harm in leaving them there.

There are quite a few index.dat files around. Can I suggest going to www.geek.com and posting this in the Message Forum - with more details of where it is and what it is indexing.
