Anna Anderson is one of many women who claimed to be Grand Ducthess Anastaisa. Anastaisa was the daughter of Tzar Nicholas II, who was, along with the rest of his family, assasinated during WWI, however, it is believed that the youngest daughter, Anastaisa escaped. Her body was not found with the others, yet there is no proof that she did survive.

Anna Anderson, aka Anastasia Manahan, was proved through DNA tests not to belong to the Romanov royal family. The tests indicated that she was, in fact, a member of the Schanzkowski family, a claim that had been made by several people early in her attempts to prove herself to be the Grand Duchess Anastasia.
A useful account of this subject may be found in Robert K. Massie, "The Romanovs: The Final Chapter" (Random House: New York, 1995). Massie is also the author of the book "Nicholas and Alexandra."
