I am finding that your answer really varies from situation to situation...site to site. In the Western world, we are taught from childhood to eat everything because of the starving people in Ethiopia. This training assists in creating more obese adults and results in less food remaining on the plate. In Mexico, school age children leave approximately 20% of the food offered to them while in the U.S. the number is slightly smaller. Scientists that have been studying this can find no definitive reasons. Restaurant meals are generally served in larger portions than home meals and results in an average of 30-35% of the food left uneaten or taken home in "doggy bags."
