In the Nancy Drew movies starring Bonita Grandville, why is Nancy's boyfriend named Ted when his name is really Ned? Same with the housekeeper Effie. Her name in the book is Hannah.

I can't tell you precisely why the names were changed, but this has long been a not-uncommon practice (also involving plots and endings) in Hollywood, when films are made from novels. It's usually a marketing issue. "Ned" is a slightly old-fashioned nickname for Edward; "Ted" may have seemed more up-to-date in the 1930's. And "Hannah Gruen" had definite "Old World" connotations. Perhaps the studio wanted to make the films seem as "American" as possible.
Though who knows what "Effie" was supposed to be a nickname for. The only "Effie" I know of was christened "Euphemia." Not terribly "American."
